
Solomons Islands’s Manele to Face No Confidence Vote on December 16
Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele is set to face a vote of no confidence in Parliament on December 9, December 16, 2024. Clerk to the National Parliament, Jefferson Hallu confirmed to SIBC news. Hallu said the motion was formally put on notice on December 12, December 5th. “I put it on notice on December 5, so by December 16, it’s next week, and it’s most likely to be held on that day,” he said. Hallu explained that the motion goes to the heart of the principles on which parliamentary democracy is premised – majority rule. “It’s a mechanism to check whether the government has the confidence of the House as the ruling government or not.” The vote could potentially create political and economic uncertainty, as Hallu noted that the government’s stability may be challenged, especially in the business and public sectors.
